5 Signs of Low Emotional Intelligence (And what you can do about it.)

Posted on January 30, 2024February 10, 2024 By Dawud (Truth) Shabazz

Ever wonder why some people seem to navigate life effortlessly, while others struggle with relationships, careers, and self-confidence? The answer might lie in their Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
In a world obsessed with intelligence, are you neglecting your EQ? Low emotional intelligence could be holding you back from true success.
In today’s world our emotional intelligence is challenged daily. Equip yourself by boosting your EQ. Here are 5 crucial signs to watch out for and some tips to help transform your self-development journey.

5 Signs of Low Emotional Intelligence:

  1. Struggle to identify and manage emotions:
    • Some people struggle to label and identify their own emotions due to a limited emotional vocabulary. Imagine having only a few basic colors to describe a colorful and intricate piece of artwork. Similarly, without a true understanding of emotional terms, recognizing subtle shifts within yourself can be challenging. This can lead to confusion, frustration, and difficulty expressing needs and boundaries effectively.
    • If you find yourself easily angered, often leading to aggressive outbursts, you could possibly be struggling to identify and manage your emotions. These tendencies develop in the absence of intentional self reflection.
  2. Lack empathy and compassion:
    • People with low emotional intelligence often struggle to identify and understand their emotions and the emotions of others. This limited understanding restricts their ability to empathize. Imagine someone experiencing sadness who simply describes it as “feeling bad.” Lacking the ability to articulate “grieving,” “disappointment,” or “loneliness,” it’s difficult to connect with others experiencing similar emotions on a deeper level. This also hinders their ability to recognize how their actions affect others, further affecting the capacity for compassion.
    • A lack of empathy often results in insensitive behaviors, making it difficult to cultivate and nurture healthy relationships. These include romantic relationships, friendships, professional relationships, and most importantly our relationship with self.
  3. Poor communication and conflict resolution skills:
    • Ineffective communication can negatively impact your mental and emotional well-being, leading to the feeling of decreased happiness and fulfillment. Sadly, people of low emotional intelligence don’t always recognize or acknowledge their poor communication skills.
    • You might have bad conflict resolution skills if you find it hard to listen empathetically and you tend to resort to aggression, blame others, or withdraw instead of seeking solutions.
  4. Constant negativity and criticism:
    • Negativity is everywhere… But so is positivity. Those of low EQ find themselves focused on the negative as a life of joy, positivity, and happiness seems unimaginable.
    • People with low emotional intelligence have a habit of complaining and criticizing rather than seeking an understanding and formulating solutions.
  5. Difficulty learning from mistakes and taking responsibility:
    • Accountability is a foreign concept to those of low emotional intelligence. They often find themselves in the same situations over and over again and due to low EQ they feel powerless to change it.
    • Overly defensive people are usually those of low EQ. Because they aren’t taking responsibility and learning from their mistakes everything feels like an attack.

Tips for developing emotional intelligence.

  • Introspection

Self reflection is a major key to cultivating emotional intelligence. We can never truly understand others and the world around us until we understand ourselves.

  • Communication

Practice active listening when dealing with others. Learn to listen for an understanding and not just for a reason to respond or an opportunity to relate.

  • Feel Your Emotions

Our emotions are a powerful force as well as vital tools for navigating life. Never try to avoid, hide, or run from your emotions. Learn to process your emotions without allowing them to drive you and influence your actions.

  • Accountability

One of the most mature things we can do in life is take responsibility. The best of us take responsibility for things that aren’t even our fault. Accountability is the fertilizer for personal growth.
